Part of the Gupta Empire between 300 AD and 500 AD, it was also under the reign of King Ashoka. Other important rulers include Madhoji Schindia, Ahilyabai Holkar, Rani Durgabati. It became a separate State in November 1956. Historically known as Malva, Madhya Pradesh came under various rulers in different times. The Chandelas constructed the fantastic temple at Khajuraho.

Art & Craft : The finest zari embroidery come from Chanderi and Maheshwar. Hand printings of various kinds, including tie and dye, is done all over the State.
